Fats

Fat is basically a component that is found in food. There are many foods like vegetables and fruits that do not include much fat (or almost to no fat) while others have a lot of fat. The best examples of foods that have a lot of fats are meats, nuts, butter and oils. The problem is that most people think that you should not eat fat at all. The truth is that fat is crucial for our body and has to be included in any good and well balanced diet. This is because there are both good fats and bad fats. The trick stands in realizing exactly what the difference is between the two and aiming to consume mostly good fats.

According to various studies performed we now know that the human body should take in fats in a quantity of around 30% of all the calories consumed on a daily basis. So if someone usually eats around 3000 calories every single day, 900 calories have to come from foods that are high in fat content. The good news is that by simply looking at the labels that you have on most foods you can realize exactly how much fat you are eating.

The biggest problem that we notice in people that want to maintain their weight or lose weight is the fact that they do not realize that there are also good types of fats out there. On the whole fats are not that easy to understand exactly because not all fat is bad. We basically have three types of fats: unsaturated fats, saturated fats and trans fats. Unsaturated fats are very common in fish and plants. They are recommended as a very good fat source because this type of fat is good for our body. The best examples of foods that you should consume are peanut oil, canola oil, olive oil, salmon and albacore tuna.

Saturated fats are usually found in animal products. Examples can be given in meat, butter, cheese and basically all types of milk but not in skim milk. This type of fat is usually used in the baked goods you buy from stores. The problem is that eating higher quantities of saturated fats will raise bad cholesterol blood levels. This immediately increases heart disease risk. Then we have trans fats, which are mostly included in margarine. They are also put into different foods you purchase from stores and will be listed on product labels, just like all the types of fats possible. Trans fats are the most dangerous fats possible and should be avoided as much as possible.
