Hypertension

Hypertension is the most extended chronic disease. It’s commonly known that hypertension is a risk factor for cerebral strokes, heart diseases and heart failure, discontinuities in the blood vessels, kidney affecting conditions and loss of sight, as well as other complications.

Still, we can be optimist because during the last 30 years there have been registered real progresses in treating hypertension, compared to the 70’s when the number of deaths cause by strokes was with about 50% higher. Anyway, it’s too early to celebrate the medical victory in defeating this disease. Most patients don’t even think about preventing this disease and do not take into consideration doctor’s recommendations regarding a healthy lifestyle until they are suffering from hypertension. There are millions of people living with this undiagnosed disease and other millions that are diagnosed but still are not currently under a specific treatment.

The value of blood pressure through arteries varies form one person to the other, depending on their activity. For example, while relaxing or sleeping, the human heart does not require much efforts and it doesn’t need to pump blood very fast. But when we are exercising, we need more blood to assure the necessary supplies of involved muscles and under these circumstances the value of blood pressure rises. Another eloquent example is the sudden change between rest and activity states. Like when we suddenly get out of bed, if the brain blood remains unchanged, then the heart must respond with increased blood quantities for other organs and muscles, therefore the values of your blood pressure must escalate.

When we are worried or afraid, our glands secret a stress hormone, called adrenalin. This hormone pushes the heart to pump harder and stronger, so a pre - hypertension condition is quickly installing. The blood pressure is usually lower in the first hours of the morning and it quickly rises between 6 am 8 AM, then it usually remains constant throughout the day until just before going to bed.

People with hypertension register irregular modification in blood pressure and various high pressure episodes during the day, for no obvious reason. Hypertension also affects pregnant women, because the pregnancy asks for much more blood quantities than the woman normally needs. It this case it is treated only with rest and relaxation, because most drugs used against hypertension could irreversibly affect the baby.
