Nutrients
Nutrients are chemicals or foods that the organism requires in order to grow and live. It can also be a substance that is utilized by the metabolism in order to achieve different goals and is taken from the environment. The human body requires different nutrients in order to stay healthy, live longer and stay strong. The most important nutrients we need are proteins, vitamins, fats, carbohydrates, fibers, water and various other nutrients.
We can characterize nutrients by the amount needed for our body. We thus have macronutrients, which are nutrients that are needed in large quantities by the human body. We also have micronutrients, which are only needed in smaller quantities. No matter what kind of nutrients we talk about, meeting the minimum requirements of each and every single one is necessary at all times.
Talking strictly about macronutrients we can say that they are defined in a number of possible ways. First of you need to know that the elements that the human body needs in larger quantities are hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, sulfur and phosphorus. These are basically chemical elements and should not be mistaken with chemical compounds. The chemical compounds that we need and can be classified as macronutrients are fats, proteins and carbohydrates. We must also consider water as a macronutrient although it is not always included on lists of macronutrients. This is because it is paired with oxygen and both are really important for the human body but are not in the same category as nutrients we get from food. We can also talk about macrominerals. This includes salt, calcium, potassium and magnesium. These nutrients are needed in much bigger quantities when compared with other minerals and vitamins. The rest of nutrients are usually considered micronutrients.
Carbohydrates are nutrients that are basically made out of sugar. If we want to classify them we can do this by simply counting sugar units number. We thus have monosaccharides (like fructose and glucose), disaccharides (like lactose and sucrose), polysaccharides (like glycogen, cellulose and starch) and oligosaccharides. Proteins are different when compared with carbohydrates as they are basically organic compounds that are made out of various amino acids that are joined by special peptide bonds. We thus have some essential amino acids that can not be manufactured by the human body. These have to be taken in daily in our nutrition plan. When consumed proteins are digested and they break down into the forming amino acids. Another highly important nutrient is fat. It is made out of glycerin molecule that has 3 fatty acids linked. Fats are highly important for the human body because without them the cell membranes would not work properly. They also help in insulating body organs and will keep body temperature at a stable level. Healthy hair and skin can not be maintained without fats. Keep in mind that our body can not create some fatty acids. These are essential fatty acids and our diet must include them so that our body will get the needed quantities of these nutrients.
If we look at all the nutrients that our body needs and basically at nutrition in general we can be overwhelmed at the many facts we must be aware of. Our body requires a well balanced diet that contains all the right quantities of every single nutrient. It is hard to know exactly how much of each nutrient we take in but the good news is that the entire subject is not as strict as some might believe. We basically need to make sure that we meet the minimum requirements of each nutrient. This is not at all difficult and a good balanced diet is usually enough to achieve this goal. Also, when it is not possible we also have the possibility of adding nutritional supplements to our diets.
