PABA

PABA is actually a short term that we use to simply talk about para-aminobenzoic acid (also known as 4-aminobenzoic acid). We are referring to an organic compound that is crystalline, white and just barely water soluble. PABA is actually a simple benzene ring that is substituted with 1 carboxyl group or 1 amino group. Laving science aside, PABA is talked about as it is sometimes referred to as Vitamin Bx by some doctors. Although few people know of its existence, you should understand that it can be good for our bodies so we do have to know more about it.

First off, PABA is essential for some bacteria as a nutrient. In the human body E. coli is responsible for creating PABA in our colon and we can say that we do not really need it from food. That is exactly why we do not find it classified as a vitamin. We do not need to eat foods that contain it as our body can actually create it. PABA is important because it is one intermediate that appears in folate synthesis. Whenever PABA synthesis is insufficient in our body we might need it as it turns into a very important nutrient that is essential and has to be included in our daily diet.

Although few people are aware of this fact, PABA deficiency is possible and there are some symptoms we should be on the lookout for. This includes depression, scleroderma, weeping eczema, irritability, unexplained fatigue, partial pigment loss and grey hair that appears prematurely. If you want to take PABA from your diet you should eat molasses, kidney, whole grains, brewer’s yeast and liver.

A few years ago we saw PABA marketed as a very important ingredient in sunscreen. Although most formulas included it we now know that it actually hurts our body as it increases skin cancer risk. That is why now companies o not use PABA anymore in their sunscreen lotions. We can also add that people suffering from Irritable bowel syndrome are sometimes prescribed PABA under pill form. This is done in order to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms that are linked with this condition. PABA is also used a lot in the creation of folic acid, azo dyes and esters.
Although few people will need PABA supplementation, those that do must be aware of the fact and when doctors prescribe it the drugs have to be taken.
